Shave of the day, 10th September 2020, PAA Doppelganger Tri-Color (Irish Moos)

  • Pre-Shave : Shower, PAA Cube
  • Brush : Oumo 24mm ACE SHD Dual Band Mancurian Badger
  • Soap : PAA Doppelganger Tri-Color (Irish Moos)
  • Razor : PAA Copper Ascension Twist Adjustable Double Open Comb w/Bic Chrome Platinum
  • Post Shave : PAA Doppelganger Tri-Color Star Jelly Aftershave, Aftershave Cologne
  • Others : Doppelganger Tri-Color Deodorant, Epic Solid Cologne

First things first.
Just got my Oumo Brush with an Ace SHD Dual Band Manchurian Badger knot

It essentially marries the backbone of a dual band with the soft tips of silvertips and being a SHD knot there’s plenty of bristles to hold lather and paint it easily on the face.
For me, I find that a 22mm or 24mm is just right, as I don’t need that much brush to lather up the face.
It is does seem to have more body than my other Dual Band that I have, and as soft as (they claim its better, but I have yet to broken it in so that is yet to be seen) my SHD Silvertips.
It is definitely not floppy which I do like.

Continuing with my old school scented shaves, PAA’s Tri-Color is a homage to Irish Moos (1969) which is a green chypre, which is another way of saying “green mossy” type scent. Very similar to Tabac, though slanted towards much more green notes this is another cologne and aftershave that was found in many a barbershop in days past.
Lather being CK-6, it’s top tier.

Going with the CATA-DOC with TSOA, a combination of the best buffing razor with one of the most consistent very sharp edged blade I have used (YMMV), riding on that CK-6 lather, made for one of the easiest, clean and irritation free BBS shave.

Smelling great, feeling fantastic, ready for a new day.

Shave of the day, 9th September 2020, Lucky Tiger

  • Pre-Shave : Shower, PAA Cube
  • Brush : Oumo 26mm SHD Silvertip Badger
  • Soap : Lucky Tiger Liquid Shave Cream
  • Razor : Tatara Masamune Base + Nodachi Cap w/Bic Chrome Platinum
  • Post Shave : Thayers Lemon Witch Hazel
  • Others : Dior Eau Sauvage Parfum

There are times when there’s nothing like a Citrus Shave and even better if they are old school.

Lucky Tiger’s shave cream has been around the block, and has one heck of a citrus scent.
Lather is surprisingly very good. Unlike most creams, it generates a very thick and slick layer that performs better with slightly more water then less. Go easy on the water though.

If you face lather add water gradually till you like the lather on the face.
Bowl lathering is easier, given its liquid nature.

Residual slickness is very good, you can and I have shaved with residual slickness with just a slight application of water with a wet hand.
Post Shave feel is so so. Good enough that you don’t feel the need for a aftershave but you’d want to anyways.

Picked up the Masamune with the Nodachi Cap, this is my favorite daily driver as it’ll give you one of the most comfortable yet close shave with its precision blade geometry.

One pass WTG, XTG and ATG with pickup pass, too Easy, true glass, perfect, no irritation BBS shave.

Finished with Thayers Lemon Witch Hazel along with Dior’s Eau Sauvage Parfum which is to me still far better than its more recent Sauvage with its beautiful and elegant citrus and resinous woods scent that has stood the test of time.

Smelling fantastic, feeling even better.

Shave of the day, 8th September 2020, Tabac

  • Pre-Shave : Shower, PAA Cube Face Wash
  • Brush : Oumo 26mm SHD Badger Silvertips
  • Soap : Tabac Original
  • Razor : Tatara Nodachi Base + Masamune Cap w/Derby USTA Blade
  • Post Shave : Tabac Original Aftershave Lotion

Can’t have old school scent shaves without Tabac.
Introduced in 1951, aftershaves and body scent around 1959, this is one of the most iconic barbershop scents. I remember when I was a kid (actually even now in some barbershops) I’d smell Tabac all the time whenever go for a haircut.

Went with the gentler Nodachi along with the USTA.
Lather was fantastic, so it was an easy one pass WTG, XTG and ATG followed up with a clean up pass.
Fantastic, zero irritation, true glass BBS shave.

Shave of the day, 7th September 2020, Palm Olive Shave Stick (Grated)

  • Pre-Shave : Shower, PAA Cube
  • Brush : Friendship Shaving Macy Dual Band Badger by Frank Shaving
  • Soap : Palmolive Shave Stick (grated)
  • Razor : Weishi Nostalgic Adjustable w/Derby USTA
  • Post Shave : Aqua Velva
  • Others : Menthol in Salt Grinder

Still on that classic / retro shave scents and it is Palmolive shave stick and Aqua Velva time! I grated my shave sticks into a tub and used it as I would any regular shave soap. Works really well, much easier to get a much thicker lather faster than I remember when using the stick as is.

Razor used is a Weishi Nostalgic Adjustable. Cheap, reliable and does the job. A far better job then some TTOs well above its price price.

Finished up with Aqua Velva!
Along with ground menthol in the Palmolive, this made not only for a retro shave of sorts but a very very refreshing one too.

Shave of the day, 6th September 2020, Fine Green Vetiver

  • Pre-Shave : Cold Shower. PAA Cube
  • Brush : PAA Peregrino
  • Soap : Fine Green Vetiver
  • Razor : Rockwell 6S-R4 w/Derby USTA
  • Post Shave : Fine Green Vetiver Aftershave
  • Others : Guerlain Vetiver

Have a hankering for old school scents.
Probably going to do a few shaves that reminds me of old barbershops, old school Aftershaves or just the sense that the soap / scent / aftershave could have been right at home 30, 50 years ago.

And to kick it off, going to start with Fine’s Green Vetiver which was inspired by Guerlain’s Vetiver released back in 1956. Talk about old school!
Still smells fantastic to me.

Fine’s lather is gloriously good, though no surprise there.

Went with the old Warhammer, with an USTA blade.
While I think Derby Premiums are probably their best blades, USTAs are a close second. Very smooth, able to take growth off easily, I like them.

Shave of the day, 4th September 2020, Taylor of Old Bond Street Cedarwood Shaving Cream

  • Pre-Shave : Cold Shower, PAA Cube
  • Bowl : Van Yulay Resin
  • Brush : Oumo 26mm SHD Silvertip Badger
  • Soap : Taylor of Old Bond Street Cedarwood Shaving Cream
  • Razor : Tatara Nodachi Head + UFO SS Handle w/Lord Platinum Blade
  • Post Shave : Cold Shower, Thayers Lavender Witch Hazel

If there is one thing about TOBS’ soaps and creams is that they smell fantastic.
Cedarwood is one of my favorites, though to be fair, its again, as with their Sandalwood, it is not a “pure” Cedarwood scent but a blend of herbs and florals sitting on top of that Cedarwood base.
Though I really enjoyed the scent, I was reminded why I prefer the soap pucks over the cream.
Performance was so so, slanting towards less water needed or you’d get thin non slick lather.

Went with the more aggressive Nodachi today, along with a Lord Platinum Blade. Made for an very efficient and extremely close shave. While you are aware of the blade on your skin, I have to really give it to Tatara that this is one of the few Blade Positive razors that I have used that I would have thought the blade exposure as blade neutral if I didn’t knew better.

All in all it was an ok shave. Should have used a bigger bowl with that brush and less water.

Shave of the day, 3rd September 2020, Col Conk’s Bay Rum

  • Pre-Shave : Cold Shower, PAA Cube
  • Brush : Friendship Shaving Macy G4 Synthetic by Frank Shaving
  • Soap : Col Conk Bay Rum
  • Razor : OREN – Occams Razor Enhanced Nano -3Dot w/Feather Pro Blade
  • Post Shave : Cold Shower, Col Conk Rose Bay Rum Aftershave

Easy off day shave, went with one of my the oldest soaps I have used even before I went back to wetshaving other then the Wilkinson Sword Black Tub, Col Conk’s Bay Rum Glycerin puck has seen huge improvements since those days.

Great scent, really good performance, and I mean for the price you pay, $6 for a 3.75oz puck, that is pretty much value the definition of value for money, well, there’s Williams Mug Shaving Soap that is just slightly cheaper but the difference in quality is rather stark.

Someone mentioned RazorRock’s Amici, I have used RR’s soaps, they are hit or miss for me (YMMV) but recently, I have come to minimize my purchases from them as far as possible.
Personal choice due to past CS interactions.

Since reformulation, Col Conk’s soaps lathers up rather easily, has some volume and density, has good initial slickness, fair residual and a post shave feel that is surprisingly good especially compared to other soaps in that price range.
It is not artisanal skin food by any means but it does the job, does it well and made the shave very enjoyable.
YMMV of course.
But yeah, I love their soaps.

Went with the Oren, and used the 3Dot plate with the Feather Professional blades.
Even so, there was minimal blade feel though I can tell that the gap made for a more blade on skin contact shave.
Still, it was mostly shaving via audio feedback.
Feather blades are very sharp so there’s very little resistance from growth and the OREN’s floating blade design made for an extremely comfortable shave.

1 pass WTG, XTG & ATG + pickup pass.
Smooth, perfect glass, zero irritation BBS shave.

Finished up with another cold shower, to take the heat off, and applied Col Conk’s Rose Bay Rum aftershave which smells fantastic. (label’s fallen off sometime ago)

Shave of the day, 2nd September 2020, Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood Puck

  • Pre-Shave : Cold Shower, PAA Cube Face Wash
  • Brush : Friendship Shaving Macy Dual Band Badger by Frank Shaving
  • Soap : Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood Puck
  • Razor : Tatara Nodachi Base + Masamune Cap w/Bic Chrome Platinum
  • Post Shave : Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood Aftershave Lotion

While some might argue that TOBs Sandalwood isn’t really true sandalwood since it is a blended scent of herbs, florals and sandalwood, it is still one of better smelling shaving soaps out there.
Love its scent and I love the performance of the puck, more so than the cream.

Still with the Gentler Nodachi, love this configuration.
Easy WTG, XTG and ATG all in one pass + pickup.
Extremely smooth, no irritation BBS shave.

Shave of the day, 1st September 2020, Ginger’s Garden Custom Blend

  • Pre-Shave : Cold Shower, PAA Cube Face Wash
  • Brush : PAA Peregrino
  • Soap : Ginger’s Garden Custom Blend Tallow (Peppermint, Eucalyptus and Tea Tree)
  • Razor : Tatara Nodachi Base + Masamune Cap w/Bic Chrome Platinum (TSOA)
  • Post Shave : Ginger’s Garden Custom Blend Aftershave

Simple stay home shave.
Went with something I got Irena to make for me, wanted a fresh, wake me up soap to shave with, though I forgot to name it so it’s left as is.
Scent is a simple blend of Peppermint, Eucalyptus and Tea Tree.
Add (grind in, or don’t) menthol to taste.
Aftershave is mentholated.

Lather is wonderfully thick and slick, if a little thirsty, though, it feels best a little on the yogurty side, then thinned out with too much water, but it is as good as any top tier soaps I have used.
Voluminous, thick and creamy, very slick, with good residual and post shave.

Went with the Nodachi – Masamune combo that I prefer and it’s still one of the smoothest shave experienced especially with TSOA.
Barely any blade feel even when going ATG around the nose and upper lip area.
Growth just melts away. It was just pure comfort.

Zero irritation, true glass BBS shave, can’t really ask for more.
